Wednesdays have become a very special time for me. My daughter, Katie, is off for the summer from grad school. Oh, she has a part time job at a running shoe store, but we have had some time to get together and just be.
You parents out there know what I am talking about when I say that we have had our rocky times. There was a time when I felt a failure as a mother.
But, I digress. Wednesday is our "Sweet Tomatoes" Day. "Sweet Tomatoes" is an almost vegetarian restaurant, with a serve yourself buffet of salad, soups, pasta, breads and low calorie desserts. It has become our habit on Wednesday.

But today, we collected our coupons for Joann's, a craft store, and headed out. Katie has become interested in crocheting, something that I like to do also.
So after buying her supplies and having lunch, we headed home to try our hand. Both of us sat in companionable silence as we chained the number.of stitches needed for our pattern. How happy and content we both were, sharing a common interest. Just like I always dreamed.
Both of us had to rip out our work several times. And it occurred to me: Wouldn't it be nice if we could do the same to the mistakes that we make in life; just rip it out and start over?
Here is my beginning of a scarf. I will let you know if it turns out.
Here is a cute bag that I got Katie to hold her projects. And I hope there will be many.

What a wonderful post this is Charlotte. As a parent of a 23-year-old daughter and a 22-year-old son, I know just what you mean. My son has been so easy, but it was not the case with my daughter. I have learned that you just need to be there and love them even when they are at their least lovable! :-)

Crocheting together in the restaurant sounds perfect! I do wish that life was like taking out our mistakes and starting over... wait a minute, it is! I make enough to know that I am blessed to be able to have "do overs" on a regular basis. I think that's why the phrase "I'm sorry" was created. Charlotte, this truly warmed my heart. There is nothing that makes my heart happier than special times with my children. Your daughter is a beautiful girl!! You must be so proud of all her accomplishments, too.
Sometimes you just have to wait until they grow into the relationship you always wanted. Wise words, Charlotte. :)
Oh, I would truly like to rip out some parts and start over! Thanks for giving me hope that rocky times can smooth out over time! (I already knew it, but like to hear evidence of it, all the same!)

Katie looks beautiful and to have the best part of her life ahead of her is such a blessing.
Motherhood is a relentless task but when it's good you can't beat that feeling I think.

What a sweet story. My daughter went away to college 14 years ago. She is in her final year of her fellowship. I don't get to see her often enough and then it's for such a short time.
You can always rip those life mistakes out - we're all human, we all make mistakes. You sound like a wonderful mother and friend.

Sweet Tomatoes sounds like my kind of restaurant. There are no vegetarian rest. near us...boo hoo.
Your daughter is lovely. Sounds like knitting is your new bonding craft. I'm so glad my mom taught me to knit. I still think of her everytime I pick up the needles.
