My Dog's Food |
I know that this sounds crazy but I started to make my dogs' food about 3 weeks ago. We were spending $50 for a 40 pound bag of premium dog food from a doggie boutique. So I thought we were doing the right thing. No grain or fillers, just good sounding combos like venison & elk, salmon & trout, rabbit & (something).
So why did it always smell like ***** (hint: first and last letters are "p") ? And they didn't like it much either.
First let me say that i am NOT a nutritionist so I am not claiming any great knowledge of what should be in a dog's diet. So proceed with caution. I figured I couldn't do any worse than what I had been feeding mine.
Enough of that stuff. I went online to get some ideas and then came up with this:
Here are some ingredients:
This is only half of the ground sirloin 90-10, I used. |
Meanwhile cook rice according to the package. I made about 4 cups, cooked.
When the meat is all browned, place in a large container. Add the pinto beans, corn and rice and mix.
Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for approximately 3 days.
Of course, you will come up with your own combinations and amounts, according to the size and number of dogs you have.
I am going to try chicken livers next week. And guess what, they love broccoli!
Did I tell you that they are loving this food??!! They scarf it right up!
My husband thought it looked so good that he was about to put some in the microwave for his dinner. LOL Not that it would have hurt him...not one bit.
And yes, they do eat out of these bowls, from the Dollar Tree. They seem to like it better than aluminum. Wouldn't you?
Peace and love of Jesus be with you today and always!

Uh oh! If my dogs see this, you will have dinner guests! Sure looks healthy to me, Charlotte.
My Oliver thinks this is a great idea! So far, I've only made treats. Dalmatians are very healthy dogs but they can't have too much protein so we have to be careful. Oliver is our third dal. He would, of course, like to eat what we eat-especially steak!!
Best,
Bonnie
Who knew I've been eating dog food!
Sure looks good.
Hahahaaa.... I feel the same as your husband!! Now I'm hungry!!
Great idea!

I'm like you Charlotte!
You just can't trust what is in that "fancy" food for dogs. I do buy eukanuba dried food for Augie since that's what his breeder said to use ---- but I give him half a cup of the eukanuba and half a can of tuna fish or salmon or what ever meat my husband is eating for the night - like the chicken wings w/ the skin and the juice or if he's eating hamburger- I give him a little of that with the grease for his skin and fur. Then mix it with the dry food. Poor dogs and cats who have to eat only dry food their whole life :-//////
I buy the tuna or salmon in the cans at Costco. He loves it when I use that!
You're such a good mom! I can see why your hubby would want to put that on his plate for dinner; it looks delicious! I've always wanted to cook my dogs' food, but there are three of them and frankly, I'm just not that diligent. If I ever get down to one dog, I might just do this. Thank you for sharing. :)
I once had a dog that constantly had medical problems, Illnesses and infections that medication could never cure. I wish i would've tried something like this.
You had asked me about selective focus...I use the focus points on my camera. I've never tried changing the focus in photoshop.
OK, that's dedication!
I thought this was going to be some fancy funny recipe with a cute name!
It does look good.
Wahoo, this looks like some good stuff and good enough for people to eat. They will love you for it with good health.
Stay warm, its cold!!!
HUGS to you.
