Lola, one of my sweet companion dogs, has a bladder infection, for which she is now being treated. But still she has to be taken out about 15 times a day until it is cured so I have been in the backyard a lot.
Today when I was leaning over the railing, I saw these two insects. And they were perfectly still so I thought they had killed each other. I ran in the house to get my camera and since I had recently purchased some macro filters, I decided to put them to the test. This on is a X4 and I put it on my 50mm lens. Apparently it doesn't allow auto focus, so I went manual. My eyesight is not what it used to be, so it is probably not crisp.
As I was changing positions, the larger insect flew into the air, along with the yellow jacket, still attached and landed a few feet away. Does anyone have a clue about this?

Looks like the yellow jacket is toast. BUT mercy, I have not see a bug like that, I wonder if it killed the yellow jacket?
Hot dog on the new lenses. I know we will be seeing more up close pictures. Its addicting!! I had to buy some strong readers like a
+3.50 to wear so I could get things a bit clearer. Once you have focused with the camera then move your body in and out to see if you can get it clearer. I call it the camera wobble-bobble as it looks funny to do this bobbing back in forth.
I AM lovin' this cool day!!! Have the windows open and its awesome! NOW if we could get some rain.

Forgot, Bless Lola's heart, I know the feeling well. I had a cat with cystitis once, he had to go potty every 10 min, I felt so bad for him. I hope she will be feeling better very soon.
What great shots! I think you did awesome with manual focus. I have been playing with my 10x lens magnifier all week and can't get a decent shot. Of course the wind keeps blowing the flowers around, so I'm blaming it on that. I have no idea what that larger insect is, but he's so interesting!

Charlotte, great first try with the lens. Tammy gave great directions for shooting w/the lens filter. And if I remember correctly from my classes, a smaller aperture will ensure sharp image throughout the insect body.
Poor Lola. I'm on the 15 x a day schedule...only have to take myself!
