Photoshoot with a newborn baby boy

"And another thing...."
I never, never thought that photographing a tiny new baby would be so difficult. What was I thinking. I was armed with info from Amanda Padgent http://everydayelementsonline.com/2011/03/newborn-photography/
and Christy at Wayoutnumbered: http://way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2011/04/behind-scenes-newborn-baby-zara.html. I had my supplies: a large black muslin, a 42" diameter reflector, blankets, water proof pad to layer under blanket, space heater, camera ( of course), camera cards, two lenses.
I'll just breeze in and out of here so that the mother can get back to, well, being a mom. Not so easy.
Number one thing I learned at this session: you must be in control. Some well wishers brought a baby gift and decided to stick around to "help". They had good intentions and were friends of the mother and grandmother, so it would have been awkward to tell them to leave. Next time I will, in a nice way.

This little baby is in love with his mom. Look at his expression.

Even babies need Gaussian blur. They have that newborn redness and bumps. Easy to fix though.
He is only a couple of weeks old, but the idea that his mom had of being in his Dad's cowboy hat didn't work as planned. First we had to stuff it with a plastic bag and a diaper pad. He is so big that he didn't sit in it as he sat on it. Ha! Isn't he cute?

It is good that digital allows you to take so many shots to get one or two good ones. He has a sweet smile here I think.

Thanks for stopping by! More about this next week I think.

You are so right...Newborns are HARD to photograph! But of course those sweet little faces are so worth the hard work. You did a great job getting lots of poses and I'm sure the mom was thrilled...good job! And I'm always so thrilled if I can help by sharing any of my experiences:)

That precious little one was wide awake with big blue eyes just for mom. What a delightful shoot and where did you get that mug? You did a super job and I know mom was happy.

YEP, its good just to have mom and you and dad. Shoots like this I have read are stressful and too many people around the baby will not relax. YOU are brave!!
